Nicaraguan:Collectibles

"Luna Bowl with Face": This is a very rare piece which was made for me by Teodulo Potosme. Really a colectors piece, it is a beautiful replica of a Luna Ware bowl found in the Nicoya region dating form approx 1000 AD. Geometric designs and figures decorate both the inside and outside of this piece, but the two wonderful faces, one on each side, really put this piece in it's own class. 11" diameter, a steal at $135.00 (Plus 4.95 packing/handling)

Conch shell shaped pot made with hand-dyed sand from the Laguna Apoyo. Each pot is individually formed and decorated; this one is done with sand where each color is dyed by the artist using natural pigments and oxides; the rust color is made from crushed bricks! Made exclusively for Mayta Clay by Mario Salazar, a young visionary artist who apprenticed and is following the footsteps of master ceramist Helio Gutierrez. Over13" wide. "Twisitng Spiral" - Tall, tiwsting, four sided "cylinder shaped pot made with hand-dyed sand from the Laguna Apoyo. This is individually formed by hand and decorated with a combination of colored sand and oxides; each color is dyed by the artist using natural pigments and oxides. "Caracol pre-Colombino" Conch shell shaped, incised pot made with alternating geometric and pre-Colombian banding. Caracol con Flores Abstracta" -Conch shell with abstract flowers: Conch shell shaped pot made with hand-dyed sand from the Laguna Apoyo. Sea Scape": Another very neat, wonderfully detailed shape with an incised and highlighted "underwater" design using free-form and geometric elements. This 1-of-a-kind piece was made for Mayta Clay and signed by the artist, Miguel Maldonado. Miguel and Enmanuel are the step-sons of Helio Gutierrez; their trainning and heritage is evident in the strong use of contemporary designs and immaculate execution. Beautifully carved Mayan dieties cover this large elipsiod shape. The relief work is outstanding and fits perfectly on this stylised bota shape (Pre-Colombian water bottle) Three were made (one for me), each one is signed by the artist Luz Gutierrez, sister of Helio, and superb craftsman in her own right. The depictions, done in jet-black are traditional Mayan gods, half-man and-half serpent in an elegantly plumed heard-dress. Very original and unique large fish form with an outstanding contemporary indigenous designs and colors. This is a beautiful work of art that transcends "pottery" by one of the visionary young artists who has grown up among the potters with his own ideas and direction. Four fish with pierced X" Beautifully balanced design of 4 geometric, textured, fish with pierced eyes and X's on each side of a full bodied, light-weight form. 8" tall by 9" wide, made for Mayta Clay and signed by Helio Gutierrez. His work is highly sought after as collectors have recognized him as a master ceramist, which is evident in all of his immaculate work. "El Jaguar": An absolutely fantastic replica of a pre-Colombian ceremonial urn found in southwestern Nicaragua and northern Costa Rica c.500-1000 AD. It was made especially for Mayta Clay and signed by the undisputed master of pre-Colombian artwork, Gregorio Bracamonte, who is internationally recognized for the outstanding quality of his work. Intricate pattern of pre-Col. Dragons and serpents wrap the front, back, arms and legs which have been painstakingly painted using natural glazes. This one has a beautiful alligator climbing the back and articulated claws on hands and feet.The jaguar head, legs and tail are hollow and rattle with clay balls inside, large at approx. 15" tall by 12" wide. These are wonderful, 1-of-a-kind collector's items and have sold elsewhere for up to $1500. This one was personally selected and is a truly oustanding work of art. Perfectly executed and balanced set of 3 "pelotas" on a large platter This is a striking work of art, all of it superbly made in relief style: the large 15" platter with sun motif and 3 spheres -half sun, half moons and stars, work together perfectly to make this a stunning centerpiece. This is wonderful, original art pottery that was made for exclusively for Mayta Clay and signed by the artis, Duilio Jimenez, who is prducing some very interesting upper-end work.
